Laura’s Amateur Genealogy Stories

About me
I’m Laura and I live in Suffolk with my husband, two children, our cat Albie and our dog Lando. After living in Surrey all my life, we made the big decision to move to Suffolk in November 2024 and are slowly becoming accustomed to the slower rural way of life. Our garden is surrounded by fields of free-range chickens and sheep, a very different outlook to where we previously lived!
I became interested in genealogy during lockdown in 2020 when I became a volunteer for HortonCemetery.org
The Friends of Horton Cemetery is a charitable organisation whose main goal is to protect the cemetery ground from development, bring dignity and respect to the thousands of mental health patients, including war heroes, who died within the Epsom Cluster of asylums and are buried, forgotten and unmarked, on a neglected piece of land in Surrey.
The Friends of Horton Cemetery are always looking for genealogical research volunteers to help. Other volunteer roles are also available. If you are interested in helping, please contact them here.
Since becoming involved with the project I have learned a lot about researching genealogy on websites such as Ancestry and Find My Past, and have taken a number of courses with Pharos Tutors. These include subjects such as apprenticeships, military ancestors and nonconformity.
On this website, I share the stories I have researched and written.
